We recently worked with the fantastic Instagram Influencer, Kim McFarlane, or @the_home_kim_built, who is known for her popular Instagram account which showcases how she has transformed her 1890s flat in Glasgow into a stylish, modern home.
Designed and supplied by our expert team at MGM Timber Clydebank, it was a pleasure to work with Kim on bringing her dream office to life and we’re excited to reveal the full project details below.
While Kim doesn’t work from home full time, thanks to her growing Instagram following, she is spending more time curating content for her social media accounts. Therefore, our brief was to design a home office that not only provided her with space to do this, but that also looked stylish and contemporary to match the aesthetic of her home.
The spare room, where the office would be installed, is quite small and narrow, and so our designers had to come up with a Beespoke solution which would fit into the space but without taking up too much room – enabling her to still have full use of the guest spare bedroom. There was also limited space between the wall and the window which meant the office had to fit into this space while still providing enough workspace.
Plus, due to COVID-19 restrictions in the early stages, some of the initial design consultations had to be held via video or phone call. However, once restrictions eased, Kim was able to visit our MGM Timber Clydebank showroom to finalise her design in person.
After an initial consultation with our Buzz Home Office designer, Bethany from our MGM Timber branch, Kim was presented with four 3D renders of different design options, based on her ideas, requirements, and the type of style she was looking for.
From these designs, Kim chose her favourite, and the final changes were made at an in-store visit. This meant that Bethany was able to play around with different colours and textures while Kim was there, making it easy to achieve the final (and perfect!) design.
The final solution is a stylish and modern fitted home office, manufactured from the high quality, German engineered Bauformat range of furniture.
As the space between the wall and window, in which the desk was to be fitted in, was narrow, the home office had to be designed to fit in this tight space while still providing a deep-enough desk space to work from.
Therefore, the worktop was manufactured at 1500mm wide and 540mm deep, with a thickness of 25mm – fitting into the space perfectly. The two units, one with a cupboard and the other containing two drawers, measured 400mm wide by 715mm high and 500mm deep.
The home office features plenty storage in the form of drawers, cupboards and open shelving to display decorative items.
The solution was delivered and installed through MGM Timber on a date that suited Kim. Being fitted into the corner of the room also means it’s tucked away but still acts as a feature of the room.
There was a slight complication due to the flat being part of an old tenement building, which meant that the walls were slightly uneven – however, our installer was able to scribe the worktop and base unit to the wall to ensure it fit perfectly.
Kim was able to choose from an extensive range of finishes for her home office, ensuring the final design was not only something she loved but that also matched the existing style of her flat.
The base unit featured a dark worktop in Black Burned which contrasted well against the lighter cupboard doors, in Concrete Grey, and base unit external colour of Moonlight Grey Silky Matt – all offset by the Black Brushed handles.
Situated above the mirror, the open shelving was supplied in Quartz Grey.
As Kim wanted this to be a multi-functional space, we also supplied and fitted a large mirror splashback so that the desk could double up as a dressing table.
This also opened up the space, creating the illusion that the space is much bigger than it is.
Kim is delighted with the finished result, commenting: “It was such a quick and easy process even during lockdown. Being able to go into the showroom to select colours and textures was exciting.”
She continues, “The end product is better than I had ever imagined. The quality of the materials is amazing and the design is exactly what I wanted. The team who fitted it was fast, efficient and very tidy. They done a great job all in.”
